ORANGE RANGE
ORANGE RANGE
ORANGE RANGE

Testing starts tomorrow.
From about a week ago all club/sports activities are on break
to give students time to study for the trimester finals...
I've studied some, but mostly I spent my spare time reading.
Japanese books I've read include Dive, Yoruno Pikunikku (Nighttime Picnic),
Midnight Call, and Sanjuuichino Chiisana Uso (Thirty-one Small Lies).
English books I've read include I Know Why the Cages Bird Sings
and A Natural History of the Senses... I'm also a quarter of
the way through The Pickwick Papers, but it's rather thick.
Other than that... well, I turned Sixteen on June 19th.
I went to Kobe with my host family and ate Italian food.
Afterwards they had a free mini-concert out on the dock
(pier? It was next to the ocean) and there was this
Brazilian guy playing acoustic guitar and a Japanese
lady dressed in a bright red dress and high heels singing
in Portuguese. It was magical. Some picsvv

<Tomatoes w/Mozzarella - One of My Favorite Dishes!><Pizza Chef>
<Concert> <Kobe Port Tower, Kind of Like the Space Needle>
I also got a haircut some time ago (2 weeks?).
It was short to begin with, but the hair stylist did this cool maneuver
where she randomly snipped at twisted chunks of hair,
making it look ragged. Sweet. If only I could dye it.

Yesterday was our taiikusai (Sports Festival).
Our class had to get to school by 7 AM to get everything ready.
First we carried our desks/chairs down the stairs and
out onto the field to make the hina-dan (stairway-type thing
each class sits on to cheer their classmates. Like bleachers, I guess.)
Then the guys had to set up the backboard,
and the girls helped afterwards to put up the blue tarp.
All of this took about an hour and a half.
*If the above makes no sense to you:
Homei has a big dirt field with
a circular track drawn on it with white powder.
On one side there are 5 or 6 long tents for the parents
to sit under, along with a podium-type thing
the principal/teachers/ASB stand on to speak
into the microphone. There's also a big drum.
On the other side of the field each class
(about 8 in each grade) has their own
hina-dan, backboard, and resting area (blue tarp),
in that order. So when the parents look
across the field they can see 23 different
billboard-type things, and under those they
can see desks and chairs stacked on top
of each other for the students to cheer from.

<Our Backboard (Blue Dragon)> <My Teacher Ms. Yamato and Our Blue Mascot>

<Me On the Left> <Behind the Backboard>
The news said that it would rain Saturday,
but the sun was out and boy was it hot!!
I had to refill my water bottle three times.
The different events were: *=I participated
*Zenko Koshin "Student March" (everyone marches onto the field,
then stands in rows facing the podium to listen to
the principal make his speech)
*Opening Ceremony (where the principal makes his speech.
2 student representatives have to take an oath of good
sportsmanship too. Oh, and some guys from the track team
runs once around the field with a torch and lights up
a goblet-type thing. Weird, and boring)
Mukade "Centipede" Race (4 or 5 students line
up on what looks like a long pair of skis and
raises their legs at the same time to move forward)

Sophomore Girls' Dance (looked like a Jewish folk dance...
like Fiddler on the roof, except with girls)
*Tsunahiki "Tug-of-war" (self-explanatory)
*Oonawa "Big Jump Rope" (each class lines up
in twos to jump a really big jump rope.
max: 34 us:14)
Sannin Yonkyaku "3 People 4 Legs" Race
(three students tie their feet together and run)

*Bukatsu Koshin "Club March" (each sports club
dresses up in their uniforms and march once
around the track. I marched behind the boys
basketball team in sweats and our team T-shirt)
Bukatsu "Club" Relay (4 members from each
sports team runs a relay with their uniforms on.
The girls bb team came in second after the track team.
The boys bb team totally goofed off and passed
a basketball back and forth while dancing around the track.
The hockey team ran while putting-around the black disc.
The kendo team of course ran in their long, heavy robes.
...I might also mention boys baseball was really, really fast
and beat the track team until the very end when the 4th
member of the track team caught up. Wow)
Tamaire "Beanbag-throw" (staff members/PTA members
throw beanbags into a basket on a tall pole)
*Junior Girls' Dance (we danced to the song "Mickey".
Pretty much like the end roll of Bring It On)
Senior Girls' Dance (w/yellow and purple pom-poms)
Boys' Kumitaiso "Group Exercise" (all the guys from
the Sophomore grade to the Senior grade line up
in rows and do different poses to the drum beat.
handstands, human-pyramids, etc... like gymnastics, sort of)

Relay (self-explanatory. Our class made third in the boys relay.)

*Ouen "Cheer "(each class performs for 2 minutes on their hina-dan
at the same time to gain points)

<I'm Pretty Much in the Middle. Height-wise, Not That Hard to Find.>
*Folk Dance (inside circle->boys outside circle->girls.
You change partners as you go along.)
*Ending Ceremony (line up, listen to principal, listen to
results... boring again)

Getting Ready for the Sports Festival (Taiikusai)

Lately I've been able to "think Japanese", but my first month or so
many of the unwritten rules of society frustrated me.
1.Don't talk to guys unless necessary.
2.Always invite others to the restroom.
3.Don't take off your necktie/use your cellphone
even if school has ended and no teacher is looking.
4.Don't wear earrings when another student is around.
At basketball...
5.Stay standing at all times, even if you're not doing anything.
6.Don't smuggle snacks.
7.Only talk to the players after practice.
8.Speak in a respectful manner to anyone who has been around
longer than you, even if they're the same grade.
9.The players always come first, even when boarding a train.
10.Don't fall asleep during a game (okay, that was bad. I didn't meant to though!!)
A lot of these just make me think, "If it annoys you that
I'm doing this, why don't you do it too?" Like, eating snacks.
Bring your own snack, I don't care.
Don't get ticked off at me for eating when everyone else is hungry too.
In the U.S. you think, "I'll do what I want, so you should too."
But in Japan it's, "I'll withhold my selfish actions and you should too."
Which is better? I like the U.S. But this is Japan.

6.4.2005
Thursday afternoon the juniors and (retired) seniors of
the girls basketball team, including the 7 managers,
held an after-party at a bar someone's father owned.
Since it was a school day we were all wearing our uniforms,
and there were about 30 bicycles parked outside (!!)
For $20 per person we were given a feast.
Sausages, fries, spaghetti, sushi, chicken...
we even got some "whole strawberry ice cream" on the house.
Each frozen strawberry was filled with milk-flavored sherbet
and covered in sugar on the outside. Yum!
Of course, the seniors said their farewells (again) and
everyone mounted their bicycles in the dark to head home.
My bicycle's head-light thing, which I didn't know even existed until then,
wouldn't work so most of the way home I stuck close
to some friends for safety. Well, they were going in the same
direction anyway, but it was very convenient for me ;)

Oops! Forgot to load this entry... it's about a week old :P
Here are my midterm (for the 1st Trimester) test results:
Math ME:27 Class Avg:28.7
History ME:70 Class Avg:57
Biology ME:66 Class Avg:62.1
Ancient Japanese ME:51 Class Avg:46
Geography ME:56 Class Avg:54
Language Arts ME:60 Class Avg:56
Sunday girls basketball won their first game easily,
and lost their second game by 38 points.
The seniors are now officially "retired" from club activities.
Yesterday the two senior guys, Keisuke and Takeru,
came to practice as "OB"s (OB=Old Boy, I guess).
They played four 10 minute games, 5 on 5, and, surprisingly,
the team w/both OBs didn't win so easily... in fact, they lost
one of the four I think. During these games I showed one
of the Sophomore managers how to work the timer.
It felt great, her asking me questions, relying on me for information,
and maybe possible looking up to me.
When in actuality I joined the team 2 days before the Sophomores :P
After the second game or so, Takeru's mom came up to the entrance of the gym
with some milkshakes from MacDonald's for the boys bb team,
so we managers had to store them into a refrigerator
in the teacher's lounge until practice ended.
There were 24, and since there are 14 players on the boys team
and exactly 10 mangers (including all the seniors, that is) I got one too.
At the end of the day we all sat in a circle in the gym,
sipping on our milkshakes, and the last "meeting" commenced.
For an hour or so the seniors talked about their experiences on the team,
why they chose Shinsai for the new captain, what each player was good at
and what each player had to work on and improve.
It was great. I loved being part of this small ceremony.
