Testing starts tomorrow.

From about a week ago all club/sports activities are on break

to give students time to study for the trimester finals...

I've studied some, but mostly I spent my spare time reading.

Japanese books I've read include Dive, Yoruno Pikunikku (Nighttime Picnic),

Midnight Call, and Sanjuuichino Chiisana Uso (Thirty-one Small Lies).

English books I've read include I Know Why the Cages Bird Sings

and A Natural History of the Senses... I'm also a quarter of

the way through The Pickwick Papers, but it's rather thick.

Other than that... well, I turned... (more)

Yesterday was our taiikusai (Sports Festival).

Our class had to get to school by 7 AM to get everything ready.

First we carried our desks/chairs down the stairs and

out onto the field to make the hina-dan (stairway-type thing

each class sits on to cheer their classmates. Like bleachers, I guess.)

Then the guys had to set up the backboard,

and the girls helped afterwards to put up the blue tarp.

All of this took about an hour and a half.

*If the above makes no sense to you:

Homei has a big dirt field with

a circular track drawn on it with white powder.

June 5th, Sunday was Yuukosan's birthday,

so the whole family headed to Osaka by car.

Once there, the boys went to the Osaka Science Center.

and the adults went to the new Van Gogh exhibit at

the Osaka Art Museum... I, of course, did not care much

for either of these two, so instead I hopped onto

the subway and revisited America-mura.

This time I remembered to take my camera,

so instead of words here are some pictures!!

Lately I've been able to "think Japanese", but my first month or so

many of the unwritten rules of society frustrated me.

1.Don't talk to guys unless necessary.

2.Always invite others to the restroom.

3.Don't take off your necktie/use your cellphone

even if school has ended and no teacher is looking.

4.Don't wear earrings when another student is around.

At basketball...

5.Stay standing at all times, even if you're not doing anything.

6.Don't smuggle snacks.

7.Only talk to the players after practice.

8.Speak in a respectful manner to anyone who has... (more)

Thursday afternoon the juniors and (retired) seniors of

the girls basketball team, including the 7 managers,

held an after-party at a bar someone's father owned.

Since it was a school day we were all wearing our uniforms,

and there were about 30 bicycles parked outside (!!)

For $20 per person we were given a feast.

Sausages, fries, spaghetti, sushi, chicken...

we even got some "whole strawberry ice cream" on the house.

Each frozen strawberry was filled with milk-flavored sherbet

and covered in sugar on the outside. Yum!

Of course, the seniors said their... (more)
